verse 1 – "O LORD, You have searched me and known me." • חָקַר (ḥāqar) – "searched": to examine deeply, like a miner searching for treasure. • יָדַע (yādaʿ) – "known": to know intimately and personally, not just by facts. • Meaning: God knows every part of us completely and personally. Verse 2 – "You know when I sit down and when I rise up." • "My sitting and my rising" is a Hebrew expression for all the ordinary activities of life. • God also understands our thoughts before we fully form or express them. • Meaning: Nothing in our daily life or mind is hidden from God. Verse 3 – "You search out my path and my lying down." • זָרָה (zārâ) – "to sift or examine carefully," like separating wheat from chaff. • God is thoroughly familiar with every step and every season of our lives. • Meaning: God carefully watches and understands every decision and direction we take. Verse 4 – "Before a word is on my tongue... You know it completely." • God knows every word before we speak it, including the motive behind it. • Meaning: God understands not only what we say but also the intentions of our hearts before we speak. verse 5 – "You hem me in behind and before." • God surrounds us on every side and places His hand on us for protection and guidance. • Meaning: God guards both our past and our future. Verse 6 – "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me." • God's understanding is beyond human comprehension. • Meaning: His wisdom is greater than we can fully grasp. Verse 7 – "Where can I go from Your Spirit?" • רוּחַ (rûaḥ) = Spirit. • Meaning: There is nowhere we can go where God is not present. Verses 8–9 – Heaven, Sheol, and the ends of the sea • Whether in the highest heaven or the deepest grave, God is there. • Meaning: No place or distance can separate us from God's presence. Verses 10–11 – God's guiding hand • God's hand leads, strengthens, and protects us. • Darkness cannot hide us from Him. • Meaning: God guides us even through our darkest moments. Verses 12–13 – God formed us • Darkness is as light to God. • כִּלְיָה (kilyah) = "kidneys," symbolizing the deepest inner being. • Meaning: God personally created us from the inside out before birth. Verses 14–15 – Fearfully and wonderfully made • Every part of our body was designed by God. • Meaning: We are God's intentional and marvelous creation. Verses 16–17 – God's plans • גֹּלֶם (gōlem) = unformed embryo. • God knew us before we were born, and our days were known to Him. • His thoughts toward us are precious and countless. • Meaning: Our lives have purpose from the very beginning. Verse 18 – More than the sand • God's thoughts toward us cannot be counted. • Meaning: His care and attention never end. Verse 19 – The wicked • David asks God to judge those who reject Him. • Meaning: Justice belongs to God, not to us. Verse 20 – They misuse God's name • The wicked speak against God with lies and rebellion. • Meaning: They reject God's truth and authority. Verses 21–22 – Loyalty to God • David rejects those who deliberately oppose God. • This is covenant loyalty, not personal hatred or revenge. • Meaning: We should not align ourselves with evil. Verses 23–24 – Search me, O God • חָקַר (ḥāqar) = search deeply. • לֵב (lēv) = heart (mind, will, emotions, and conscience). • דֶּרֶךְ עוֹלָם (derekh ʿolam) = everlasting way. • Meaning: David asks God to reveal any hidden sin and lead him in the path of everlasting life.
